Africa Code Week
Over the last two weeks I’ve been part of the Africa Code Week initiative and what an eye opener it’s been!
Sharing knowledge and introducing learners to coding concepts has been great in itself but the biggest take away is definitely how much I’ve learnt about myself in the process and how much potential there is in our high schools.
When I found I was going to be tutoring at public schools I did think… Man am I going to survive… I’ve seen the online videos and heard all the horror stories but I’m pleasantly surprised at how well mannered learners were, yes there were the cool kids, the talkers, the ouens, but overall classes were pretty cool.
These are definitely the types of projects our education system needs more of and the way that subjects and mindsets around education are evolving is really promising, the work landscape is changing rapidly and the way education is delivered also needs to mirror the kind of jobs the next generation will be applying for so I was really happy to learn that some actual coding languages will be offered as curriculum subjects in the not too distant future.
